Applied Math Formula: (400 sq ft × 12) ÷ 5.5" + 10% waste

Contractor Tip

When ordering lumber for baseboards or decking, always buy boards that are 2 feet longer than your longest room spans. This dramatically minimizes unsightly seam butt-joints across visible areas!

How Do You Calculate Linear Feet: Comprehensive Contractor Guide

Whether you are renovating a living room, building an outdoor redwood deck, ordering custom trim molding, or booking Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight, calculating linear feet (often abbreviated as LF or lin. ft.) is one of the most essential skills in carpentry, contracting, and logistics.

1. What Exactly Is a Linear Foot?

A linear foot is simply 12 inches (1 standard foot) measured in a straight one-dimensional line. The term "linear" exists solely to emphasize that you are only measuring distance along one axis—completely ignoring the width, thickness, depth, or shape of the material.

Linear Foot (LF)

1D Length (12 inches). Measures baseboards, framing studs, pipe, wire, fencing, and fabric.

Square Foot (SQ FT)

2D Area (144 square inches). Measures floor tiles, carpets, drywall, lawns, and roofing.

Board Foot (BF)

3D Volume (144 cubic inches = 1" thick × 12" wide × 12" long). Used for rough-sawn hardwood lumber.

2. How to Convert Inches to Linear Feet

If you have a tape measure reading in inches, simply divide the total measurement by 12:

Linear Feet = Total Inches ÷ 12

Example: You have 14 pieces of trim, each measuring 96 inches long:
Total Inches = 14 × 96 = 1,344 inches
Linear Feet = 1,344 ÷ 12 = 112 Linear Feet

3. How to Convert Square Feet to Linear Feet (Flooring & Decking)

When ordering decking boards or hardwood flooring planks, stores sell by linear foot or require you to calculate how many board feet you need to cover a square foot surface area. Use the universal formula:

Linear Feet = (Square Feet × 12) ÷ Board Face Width (in inches)

Example: Suppose you want to build a 350-square-foot backyard deck using standard composite boards that are 5.5 inches wide:

  1. Multiply total square feet by 12: 350 × 12 = 4,200
  2. Divide by the board width: 4,200 ÷ 5.5 = 763.64 Linear Feet
  3. Add 10% for offcuts and end-trimming: 763.64 × 1.10 = 840 Linear Feet

4. Standard Lumber Dimensions Reference Chart

Always calculate linear feet using the actual dressed surface width of lumber, never the nominal marketing label:

Nominal Lumber Size Actual Dimensions Actual Face Width (Inches) Linear Feet Needed per 100 Sq Ft
1x4 or 2x4 3/4" × 3-1/2" or 1-1/2" × 3-1/2" 3.5 inches 342.8 LF
1x6 or 2x6 3/4" × 5-1/2" or 1-1/2" × 5-1/2" 5.5 inches 218.2 LF
5/4 × 6 Decking 1" × 5-1/2" (Standard Deck Board) 5.5 inches 218.2 LF
1x8 or 2x8 3/4" × 7-1/4" or 1-1/2" × 7-1/4" 7.25 inches 165.5 LF
Standard Hardwood Flooring 3/4" × 3-1/4" Face 3.25 inches 369.2 LF
Narrow Strip Hardwood 3/4" × 2-1/4" Face 2.25 inches 533.3 LF

5. Calculating Linear Feet for Baseboards, Molding & Fencing

Baseboards and crown molding trace the perimeter of a room. To calculate:

  • Room Perimeter Formula: Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
  • Subtract Obstacles: Subtract 3 feet for each standard interior door or sliding patio door where baseboards will not run.
  • Add Corner Miter Waste: 45-degree inside and outside miter cuts consume extra lumber. Always add 10% (or 15% for multi-corner rooms).
  • For Fencing: Simply measure along your property line from corner post to corner post. A fence enclosing a 60 ft × 120 ft backyard requires 2 × (60 + 120) = 360 Linear Feet of bottom and top rails.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 10×10 room has 4 walls of 10 feet each, equaling 40 linear feet perimeter. Subtracting one 3-foot doorway leaves 37 feet. Adding 10% for miter cut waste (3.7 feet) gives approximately 41 linear feet of baseboard molding.

Standard North American dry van semi-trailers are 53 feet long and 102 inches wide (allowing 2 standard 40"×48" pallets loaded side-by-side). Linear footage is calculated by how many feet of the trailer's 53-foot floor length your shipment occupies. Ten 48" pallets loaded 2-wide create 5 rows × 4 feet = 20 Linear Feet of trailer floor space.

Only if you know the width of the material! To convert linear feet to square feet, multiply linear feet by the width in feet (or multiply linear feet by width in inches, then divide by 12): Square Feet = (Linear Feet × Width in Inches) ÷ 12.

The industry standard rule of thumb is 10% for straightforward rectangular rooms and parallel decking. For complex diagonal layouts, curved borders, or rooms with numerous corners and alcoves, bump your waste factor to 15% to 20%.
